13. Self-Esteem Versus Self-Acceptance: Raising The Awareness Of School Counselors To The Dangers Of The Former And The Hope Of The Latter  [Click On Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]  The title of this course sounds like heresy in today's education, but there is a point to be made here.  Feelings of inferiority are as common as the cold and engender many problems with health and happiness. The information here will help change thinking about what we are doing to kids in the schools.  The concept of self-esteem is one of the most damaging things we force upon young people.  It holds that people are only worth something when they are doing great and good things thus, supposedly, increasing the self-esteem of the young person.  They are taught over and over that they are only worth something when their achievements and accomplishments are high.  Being the fallible humans we all are, there are many, many times when we come short of the perfection that self-esteem advocates espouse.  Therefore, it is back to the feelings of anger and self-loathing that characterize many of our adolescents' dispositions.  If we were to teach students to value themselves when they, indeed, do well and also teach them to be self-accepting when they fall short of the prevailing expectations, then students can retain a more healthy outlook on life and progress toward discharging their self-defeating behaviors.  They can be made to see that they are just as valuable when they are doing well and when they are, perhaps, not reaching every goal we set for them.  Materials include a Course Description, Course Directions, Course Outcomes, Textbook Reference, Study Guide Questions, Vocabulary List, , Supplementary Readings, and Related Links to guide the study of the material in the course.  A final examination with a satisfactory score is required for successful completion of the course.  NBCC Content Area: Counseling Theory. 14. Anger: How To Help Students Live With It and Live Without It.  [Click On Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] The youth of today seem to harbor anger about a myriad of things in their lives.  It can be trouble at home where a mother re-marries a man who the kids do not like.  It can be the break-up of a teen romantic relationship.  It can be anger at the parameters placed on the young person at school leading to their disillusionment with the school setting and eventual separation from that environment.   Basic personality differences between students lead to the increase of angry outbursts that punctuate the school day.  There also can be serious ingrained rage that centers upon some emotional instability the child may possess.  Whatever the reason, anger may be the prime ingredient in many of the outbursts and inappropriate behavior we see in the schools, in the community, and at home, some of which we have seen to end up in violence against the school and students.  Curbing the rage of these young people is a very difficult task, but one which counselors should be equipped to deal with.  This course presents information on anger in young people and outlines a set of strategies for more appropriately dealing with the rage of this age.  Individual and group approaches will be mentioned as well avenues for understanding the type of anger that permeates the children we see in school.  Materials include a Course Description, Course Directions, Course Outcomes, Textbook Reference, Study Guide Questions, Vocabulary List, Supplementary Readings, and Related Links to guide the study of the material in the course.  A final examination with a satisfactory score  is required for successful completion of the course. 16. Counseling At-Risk Youth: Issues and Answers.  [Click On Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] Dealing with the student who may drop out of school is an increasing focus of the work of school counselors today.  This course is an investigation of this population and an overview of many of the approaches that have been attempted  over the years.  Counselors should be aware of the problems as well as the potential of this population in our schools today.  Model programs will be introduced that are in operation throughout the country that strive to address the needs of these young people in the schools.  Multicultural considerations will be reviewed and referenced. The role of counselors, teachers, and administrators in educating this population is outlined for a better understanding of the responsibility of this group of professionals to make a difference in helping these students to make better decisions about their education and their lives.   There is no magical solution for the dropout problem. The problem is complex and requires an intricate array of solutions.  Dropout characteristics are many and varied necessitating differing kinds of programs and approaches. To succeed programs have to provide one-on-one attention to at-risk students who are already convinced of their own failure and need to be reinforced to be successful in school.  Children who are at risk for dropping out need to be identified at an early age.  Success in the early years dampens the prospects for failure in the later years.  Solutions to the at-risk problem require the efforts of a wide spectrum of constituencies including teachers, counselors, administrators, business, community resources, and the  various levels of government. 18. Standards In The Schools: No Counselor Left Behind.  [Click On Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] This course is about the future of American education - what it could be - what it had better be - if we intend to meet the demands of the kind of global/technological world in which we seem to be living . This course shows how American public schools can be saved by instituting high standards for academic achievement. The course explains not just what the standards movement is all about, but also what it will take to bring every student up high standards no matter where that student starts.  The information here shows this single-minded focus on achievement will change everything - from the kinds of curriculum materials we use to the design of elementary and middle schools. This will also entail the abandonment of the comprehensive high school and the institution of a diploma based upon meeting standards, rather than attendance.  At the heart of this revolution are the performance standards themselves, which provide clear expectations for student achievement  by showing examples of standard-setting student work.  This course advocates the building of a standards-based instructional system, creating a results-oriented culture devoted to continuous improvement, and making the individual in it accountable for reaching the goals set by the standards. The course shows how a standards based education - one based on national industry skill standards - can provide the focus for many of our youth, regardless of whether they are going to be doctors or plumbers (we ALL go to work after our formal education). Convincing examples are given of schools who are successfully implementing a standards-based approach. Many excellent resources for systemic change are included. This is vital information for counselors as we enter into the 21st century. The course also acts as a primer to PL 110-107 The No Child Left Behind Act signed by President Bush in 2001.  It will transform American education like no other law since 1965.  This course will offer the counselor a beginning introduction to the law and to its implications for teachers and counselors in our schools. NBCC Content Area:  Professional Orientation. 20. Counseling Students With Eating Disorders [Click On The Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]  The cultural obsession with slimness has reached a level which is seriously hurting millions of our youth. Messages are conveyed to our youth that they are less than perfect unless they somehow manage to achieve a body size and shape which is biological sustainable for only a handful of people.  Other aspects of appearance are ignored except those characteristics that fall within the lowest range of weight for height that is considered normal. The upshot of all of this is that many children see themselves as  defective or less than perfect because their weight is at a level that is genetically and biologically appropriate for them.  The few children who do meet the slimness standard are generally afraid to eat because of an irrational fear of gaining weight.  Fear of gaining weight and desperate desires to lose weight are facts of life for many of our young people which threatens their long-term health.  What may be just a serious if the pervasive self-loathing that compromises the healthy development of the next generation of young people. 21. Up In Smoke - The Pushers And Their Victims. [Click On The Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] -   - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]   The Center for Disease Control estimates that about 3000 teenagers in the United States reach adulthood as "hooked" and habitual cigarette smokers.  Most of these teen smokers had their first cigarette at age 14 or 15.  An estimated one in four of these individuals will eventually dies of a smoking-related illness.  Of the 400,000 people who die each year from a smoking-related disease or illness, 80-90% began smoking as teenagers. As the overall number of smokers has declined as adults have quit or died premature deaths, the number of teens who start more than offset this decline.  The Surgeon General's report of 1964 and subsequent findings have had little impact on these young people. In the future, the issue of underage smoking is likely to draw continual comment from scientists, politicians , educators, public health advocates, parents and the teens themselves.  This course attempts to examine the issues surrounding these devastating conditions, its history, the health facts, perspectives of smokers, ex-smokers, and non-smokers, and a wide range of thought on the causes and effects of teen smoking.  The 3000 young people that make the decision each day to start smoking with all of the attendant health and social considerations will affect not only their own lives, but the attendant effects of this health debacle will have health access issues for all of us.  This course is designed to help a counselor begin planning for a smoking cessation program in the school by examining many of the major issues surrounding the serious problem.  Facts, figures, and statistics are presented that show the terrible cost that smoking inflicts upon people, especially young people.  Some programs that have been successful throughout the country are outlined and reviewed. The counselor role in the education of young people in this vital health area is reviewed. NBCC Content Area: Societal And Cultural Foundations. 23. Counseling With Students Of Other Cultures: The Basics Of Ethnic Diversity In The Schools[Click On Title To Go To Course Page] [10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]  Understanding that the United States is a pluralistic society and the schools are a reflection of that society, school counselors have been making efforts to improve services for those who are entrapped in stereotypical roles: ethnic groups, such as Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and American Indians. Sweeping changes have happened in America's schools in the last 30 years. Racial and ethnic origin have never been such a big issue.  The United States has the largest number of immigrants in history.  Gender diversity has emerged as an issue in the schools and society. Persons with disabilities are also part of the diversity picture.  Perhaps most dramatic of all, the structure of the American family has been transformed and is different in ways never dreamed of just a few years ago.  All of these changes have greatly complicated our ability provide equitable and high quality counseling services and learning experiences for all students. All of these challenges offer their own unique opportunities. The professional counseling literature has been paying more attention to the ways in which training can be improved so that counselors can work more effectively with clients from these groups.  The major emphasis of this course is on helping the school counselor become aware of the the differences in the above ethnic groups, how to become aware of their own potential biases, accepting differing social and cultural beliefs, helping counselors adapt adapt their techniques and skills to the special characteristic of each of the diverse groups, and providing a framework for addressing the multiple challenges of student diversity.  The work in this course will help the counselor recognize and eliminate the individual and institutional barriers of prejudice, and discrimination. Specific activities and approaches to broaden awareness, understanding, and communication are provided. 31. Enhancing School Achievement Through Counseling [Click On Title To Go To Course Page][10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]  School counselors have long needed effective strategies that will improve their role in enhancing student achievement at all costs.  This course gives the counselor a working definition of student achievement within the context of Professional Learning Communities in the schools today and strategies to employ when students do not learn.  With the current emphasis on getting students to achieve to their potential, the counselor must develop a role to assist the other segments of the school community to achieve goals of setting high expectations and attaining them. The counselor is a pivotal player in the student achievement effort in the school.  This study emphasizes the Professional Learning Community [PLC] as a blueprint for school-wide and system-wide interventions to insure that all students who can learn, will learn. The work here answers the three burning questions about our schools: [1] What is it we want our students to learn? [2] How will we know when students have learned these skills? [3] Most importantly, how will we as professionals, respond when students experience initial difficulty so that counselors and teachers can build approaches to improving current levels of learning? Collaboration is the life blood of effective strategies to insure student learning and the counselor plays an integral role.  All educators, including school counselors, need to lay down the debilitating effects of past priorities and share in the common efforts to insure learning for all in today's schools.  The goal is to keep firmly in mind the dreams and aspirations of the children who come to school.  The parents who send them there, and the teachers, counselors, and administrators who entered the profession to make a difference in the lives of students. 32. Character Development In The Schools [Click On Title To Go To Course Page][10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] The word character comes from the Greek word chassein which means to engrave such as on a wax tablet, a gemstone, or a metal surface. From there it developed into a distinctive sign or mark and then into an individual's pattern of behavior.  Good character is knowing the good, loving the good, and doing the good.  This involves the head, heart, and hand in a integrated way.  It is the sum of our intellectual and moral habits, a mixture of virtues and vices.  There is much for students to learn in school , but nothing is more important for our personal happiness and the health of society than the dispositions and habits that make up good character.  Students are academically, socially, and morally "wprks in progress" and need to be the crafters of their own characters.  The essence of character education is "What you are to be you are now becoming."  This course helps counselors take their students seriously as persons and help them become informed and responsible moral agents in society. This course outlines the steps to creating and implementing a successful character education program along with all of the attendant activities.  The readings in this course will generate many ideas from how to introduce conflict resolution through readings in values education.  Some exemplary programs are reviewed as examples and sources of new ideas and ways to develop character in today's students. [10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] The focus of this course is on the ways we counsel youth to enter the job market.  We have neglected this segment of our school population too long.  Counselors today must be in a position to address the needs of this group of young people who will take their places in society.  The characteristic of this population and the barriers they find in fining and keeping jobs may be daunting.  The course offers counselors some compelling solutions and suggestions that may be useful in responding to this challenge. The major parts of the course include  diversity in employment-bound youth, opportunities for this group of youth, emerging economic investment for employment-bound youth, career development in the schools for students entering employment, school-to-work transition, career counseling for students entering the job market, the counselor and related career interventions, and the challenges to and the future of career counseling and guidance.  The school counseling approach to the development of this major segment of our school population is the major concentration of the work in this course. The readings and study in this course centers upon an often forgotten segment of the school population, those students who choose not to go to college and instead go to work.  A significantly large segment of our population fall into this category.  The literature in counseling sometimes has not addressed the needs of this population as it has other segments of the population.  Options for these students must be as thoroughly explored as with the college-bound population. Implications for school counselors are discussed as well as strategies for success in facilitating the life career development of these students. 35. School Approaches To Family Counseling [Click On Title To Go To Course Page][10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY] The focus of this course is on a sound theoretical foundation with very practical approaches and techniques for offering family counseling in the school setting.  The nature of school counseling has changed drastically in recent years.  In the past we tended to concentrate on the kinds of services that we knew best.  Today's school counselor is called upon to tailor our interventions to the widely varying needs of a heterogeneous student population.  Today's students and their problems are non-traditional so today's counselors must be flexible, innovative, and prepared to learn new skills. Focusing on families, rather than solely on individuals, requires that school counselors make some difficult and sometime uncomfortable adaptations. In dealing with families, assessment and intervention strategies are complex and require an understanding both of human beings, of the systems that affect them, and how the school may play a role in this work.  Family counseling is rapidly becoming the treatment of choice for dealing with a variety of issues and problems.  School counselors have learned that every student has a family that significantly impacts their performance in the school, whether that be positive or negative. Counselors are also aware that they must work with families if they hope to have a significant impact on their students' lives and enable them to make better decisions about their lives. This course investigates how the school counselor can provide family counseling in the schools employing a family systems perspective. The basis of the course rests upon the idea that family counseling can be provided by school counselors with a proper orientation to a systems viewpoint rather than relying on referrals to outside agencies.  The course pays particular attention to helping counselors to become more knowledgeable about and effective in using family counseling techniques and interventions. Systems theory and therapy in a school counseling setting are thoroughly explored.  Family counseling techniques that might yield success in the school setting are explored.  Special issues are also discussed including: abuse, anorexia, substance abuse, ADHD, and anti-social behavior. Approaches are covered for dealing with crisis situations in the schools and managing them with attention to a family systems strategy. 37.  Asperger's Syndrome [Click On Title To Go To Course Page][10 contact hours] -  - [$50.00 - NO OTHER FEES APPLY]   Asperger Syndrome or (Asperger's Disorder) is a neurobiological disorder named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper which described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who had normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. In spite of the publication of his paper in the 1940's, it wasn't until 1994 that Asperger Syndrome was added to the DSM IV and only in the past few years has AS been recognized by professionals and parents. At this time there is a great deal of debate as to exactly where AS fits. It is presently described as an autism spectrum disorder and Uta Frith, in her book AUTISM AND ASPERGER'S SYNDROME, described AS individuals as "having a dash of Autism". Some professionals feel that AS is the same as High Functioning Autism, while others feel that it is better described as a Nonverbal Learning Disability. AS shares many of the characteristics of PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder; Not otherwise specified), HFA, and NLD and because it was virtually unknown until a few years ago, many individuals either received an incorrect diagnosis or remained undiagnosed. For example, it is not at all uncommon for a child who was initially diagnosed with ADD or ADHD be re-diagnosed with AS. In addition, some individuals who were originally diagnosed with HFA or PDD-NOS are now being given the AS diagnosis and many individuals have a dual diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism.  This course is intended as an introductory overview for counselors to better work with these students and parents.
